Bow Hill Blueberries & Samish Flats Farm
General Description: 
Established in 1947, Bow Hill Blueberries, is the oldest family-run blueberry farm in the Skagit Valley. It’s 4500 high bush blueberries are a combination of Blue Crop, Jersey, Rubel and Stanley.

We are in the second year of transitioning it to Certified Organic and rejuvenating the farm into the vibrant community gathering spot it once was. Our passions are quality, taste, growing organic, the customer experience and sharing what we are grateful to have inherited from the original family.

Four miles from the blueberry farm is Samish Flats, a 40 acre Certified Organic grass farm, 20x80 high tunnel and a large Nature Conservancy project for migratory birds. Here you are encouraged develop an independent in the high tunnel.

Bow/Edison is a beautiful area with an active music, art, food and farming scene.

Internship Offered:
You will also be part of the Skagit FIELD Program. 
Skagit County FIELD is an educational internship program that provides a young farmer community and a diversified experience in which to study sustainable agriculture. Developed by farmers and the Skagit County WSU Small Farms Team, the FIELD program combines formal instruction with farm tours and off-site workdays with associated farms.

Minimum Length of Stay: 6 months

Educational Opportunities: All facets of organic blueberry farming including: Tilth rejuvenation after long-term conventional practices; Organic weed and pest management; conversion from overhead to innovative under canopy irrigation; picking labor management; marketing and social media; packaging and distribution; small farm finance; You-pick & We-pick retail farm store; farmers markets; value added production and Agritourism event management and kid’s day camp.

In addition to the blueberry farm there is:
  • Independent organic high tunnel project
  • Organic pasture management intensive grazing practices
  • Creation and maintenance of habitat for migratory shorebirds with the Nature Conservancy
  • Vertically integrated poultry process
  • Raising and processing chicken and meat goats
 
Stipend: TBD based on experience.
Housing: Housing available.
Meals: Shared meals TBD.

Skills Desired: We expect Interns to have integrity, work hard, communicate well, be curious, have attention to detail, have a sense of humor and be good with people. Extra points if you have business, carpentry or artistic skills. Extra extra points cook well.

Hours: Interns are an integral part of our business and will be treated with respect and integrity. 40 hour work weeks required until harvest which may require longer hours. Keep in mind that farming is not a 9-5 job and you must be flexible to the whims of nature.
